MG 00 Raiser Review

I was very excited when the mg 00 raiser was announced as it would complete the MG line of all 3 of Setsuna's suits from s1 to the movie. There probably was no surprise when 00 raiser was announced as a MG since it is a lead suit, though it is kinda unconventional for a gundam to be released in PG form first before MG. Some people preferred the seven swords variation which MG was announced by the time i finished building the kit. No regrets though, cause i will pick the 00 raiser anyway since it is the one that appeared in the anime. And it is the GN-0000 00 Gundam. 6 zeros.

1. Intro
Model: 00 Raiser
Size: Mg 1/100
Pilot: Setsuna F. Seiei

Boxart:
Extremely big box and gorgeous boxart,

Shows that it can house a total of 5 leds. It only included 1.

Always good to have an unpainted picture. Shows a ton of weapons and accessories.

Manual:

Same cover as boxart.

Price: 6500 yen. On the high end of MG's price spectrum. Shall see if the kit is worth the penny.

2. Parts

Head
Very detailed design, and there are different sets of stickers for the eyes and the left and right side. For the eyes i used the one that allows light to shine through. Looks fine but i feel like the regular ones may look better since i cannot possible use the led 24/7.  There is a black sticker to wrap around the neck so that light does not come out from the head. The 2 sides have clear green parts covering the stickers underneath for the 3d effect, like the MG exia.
Back of the head.

Torso:
On first look it seems like a standard lead gundam's torso with the usual red, blue, white and yellow.
But it has amazing articulation as it can move side to side and even forward and backwards. Which unfortunately also spells trouble when the 0 raiser is attached. Perhaps in this case there can be less articulation in favour of stability?
This is where the led can be put in.

Arms:
The shoulders are very small since the twin drives and the side binders will be added later.
Solid arms with good articulation as seen. The clear green laser-etched parts look as good as expected.

The waist has a simple and plain design. The beam sabers are attached and the back and are movable.
Back of the waist.

Legs:
Solid legs and they can bend up to 180 degrees as seen. Awesome clear green parts appear again.

Ankle is very movable as well, but is more stable than mg exia's.

Backpack:
Front shot.
The twin drives can be moved to the front to form come sort of gn particles shield probably only used once in the anime. The clear green seen in the drives are actual clear green parts and it was a real treat to build them.

Back shot. The trusters are movable as well. The grey inside looks great, like some kind of inner frame for the back pack.

Weapons:
2 Gn sword II and an attachment to attach them together. The markings are decals and i should have put them on opposite sides.... The clear green part comes in clear green like in the next plus gundam games instead of blue.
Top: sword mode with the attachment part on. Bottom: Rifle mode.  Transformation is pretty straight forward.

Combined, the resulting weapon is very long.

The Gn sword II can be mounted very securely on the waist.

Gn shield x 2. Great looking decals. You can move the blue part by removing it and re-attaching it to another point to expose the grey part. Left gn shield: before transformation. Right gn shield: after transformation.

Yet again they can be combined to form a .....surfboard?

Gn sword III. Big and badass. I did not really like this weapon when i first saw it in the anime as it seems just like exia's gn sword. But after building it i am a big fan now. It looks simply awesome.
A top view.

Accessories:
The led that comes with the kit. This one seems to not flicker at all, works better than my MG exia's led which flickers. Battery sold separately,2 LR41 batteries used.
I am personally happy they only included 1 led. More leds included= higher price.

The 2 GN condensers and the clear milky part are used for its movie form. The clear part is the 0 raiser's sensor. Not going to use them though.
Tons of small parts begging to get lost. We have extra hands for weapon holding, Landing gears for the 0 raiser and Gn sword III. ( yes, the Gn sword III is so awesome it has its own landing gear.) Standing figures of setsuna and his favourite neighbour saji.
There is a peg in the hand to hold the weapons well.

0 Raiser:

0 Raiser with one side binder attached.

No problems with the attachment. As secure as it can be.

On an action base. Just based on this 0 raiser alone, i give full marks. The Gn sword III looks very good with the 0 raiser and there simply are no problems.
On a side note you can use the landing gears and display the 0 raiser on the ground itself with and with the Gn sword III. But as a fighter jet it is clearly made to go with an action base. Only slight nitpick is that if u display 0 raiser by itself with the landing gears, the side binders touch the ground.

                          Front view.

                      Back view.
                       Side view.
Mind=Blown.
The landing gear is attached to the Gn sword III and it miraculously supports the 0 raiser single-handedly. It is rather stable, unless something hits it from the side, of course.
You can simply display the Gn sword III by itself standing by its own landing gear.

Details and Articulation:

All assembled, the 00 gundam comes across as pretty bland in its design without the 0 raiser and its swords.
Articulation is top-notch as expected from a 2011 kit. The legs in particular can do any poses u want it to.

With the 2 Gn shields on the side and the 2 Gn sword II, the gundam looks much better aesthetically, and it is a perfectly symmetrical gundam.

A backshot. The Gn shields and sword II attaches on very well.

Equipped with the Gn sword II rifle mode, there are 2 slots for the hand peg. The top one is used for the rifle mode, bottom one is for sword mode. I used the wrong one in this case....

Equipped with the Gn shields combined. I seems to have some inconsistency issue with the attachment of the shield to the arm. Sometimes it works and there is an assuring click sound, other times it does not click and it does not seem very secure.

Removing the backpack and the grey part, slot in the led light. The light shines upwards to the head.

Can only see a faint light emitting from the eyes and from the sides. Should try again at night..

To get the 00 raiser, first detach the 2 side binders from 0 raiser. Then bend top part as shown.

Attaching the 3 parts are self-explanatory. And now we have the 00 raiser. The gundam went from being slim to being possibly the widest-looking gundam in history. As expected the model will have some problems in a standing pose. So legs are adjusted backwards considerably. Articulation will be reduced due to the sheer bulk but it is with no doubt a cool and detailed MG even if it is oob ( out-of-box built).
In case people still think that it needs more width, the Gn shield can be further attached on. The side binders can also be spread opened for good measure.

A backshot.  Every single detail of the model is there, and there is no need for any painting to be done except some panel-lining. All clear parts come painted which is even better than the PG where there is a clear blue part that comes unpainted. So full marks for details.

4. Poseability

Poses look much better on an action base.
Gn sword II- one is rifle mode, the other in sword mode.

Sword mode looks better with setsuna.

It can easily reach out to its back and grab the beam saber, if setsuna loses his sword again.
HA!
Even if both Gn sword II are lost...

00 Gundam is still a mean killing machine with just beam sabers.

The Gn drives in front looks awkward due to bad posing skills.
ORE WA GUNDAM!

With the weight increase due to the 0 raiser, posing is much harder as parts do tend to want to fall off.
The side binders can be moved forward and there is a locking mechanism in the twin drives component to ensure the side binders stay there. However still do be careful with posing as the side binders can still fall off in the midst of adjusting.

There are effect parts for this pose.

This was what exactly happened in the anime. Trans-am giant beam sword that cuts through memento mori the 2nd.
It is also not an easy task to balance the 2 Gn sword II.

Combining the 2 Gn sword II.

A close up. It holds the weapon surprising well considering the combined weight of the 2 swords.

Looking up.

ORE WA GUNDAM! ( complete with 0 raiser)

The 2 side binders balance out in their weight distribution. But the model tends to sag backwards due to it being back-heavy and the excess waist articulation.
GN sword III in rifle mode. A really big badass weapon.

GN sword III in sword mode. I was worried if the sword III could make the model sag to one side due to uneven weight distribution. But so far so good and i have no problems with that yet.

More GN sword III action.
Just when i though the Gn sword III was big...  No luck displaying this.
A closer-up. The extra weight by this giant effect part meant that it can only hold the weapon in a upwards position or it will just be pulled down by gravity.

5. Sturdiness

This is sturdy, no falling parts or anything like that.
This is also sturdy, no falling parts too.

This is not sturdy. Parts do want to fall off. Eg. when adjusting the side binders the gn sword II may suddenly get loose and etc.

6. Conclusion

At 6500 yen, you do get the gundam and the 0 raiser and a ton of effect parts and accessories. So price wise it is actually worth the penny. MG 00 seven swords/G at 5500 yen will be mostly the same kit but without the 0 raiser. It is probably a matter of personal preference which kit to get. I personally am very happy with this model and will not get the seven swords variation.

Details: 10/10 nothing i will improve. Effect parts, laser-etched clear parts, extra parts for condenser version. All that can be included is included.
Articulation: 8/10 Only issue is too much articulation in the waist causes the model to sag slight backwards with the 0 raiser.
Sturdiness: 6.5/10 With the 0 raiser on, the gundam inevitably becomes less sturdy.
Poseability: 9/10 Patience needed to change poses. But the number of poses that can be done is unparalleled.

The awesomes:
1. All clear parts are painted.
2. Can put 5 Leds for a light-up fiesta.
3. Posing possibility is the best i have seen so far.
4. GN sword III has its own landing gear.
5. Effect parts look good and are not filmsy.
6. A mean-looking model

The not-so-awesomes
1. Back heavy due to 0 raiser.
2. Tons of small accessories begging to get lost. Use a ziplock bag to solve this problem.
3. Hard to change poses due to the sheer bulk and multiple moving parts.

                MG trans-am 00 raiser anyone?

    1. The kit itself comes with 1 led light. Total of 4 can be used on the kit. 1 on torso, 2 for the 2 Gn drives on the shoulders, and 1 on the 0 raiser. The light from the torso's led can light up the head as well.
