Part II of my review of the mobile suit gundam movie trilogy. ( see part 1 here)
Continuing where the movie left off, the second movie starts off with a recap of movie one and white base continue to be on the run. The crew do have the time to take a group photo though.
Take off from White Base!
After another encounter with Ramba Ral, white base managed to capture a prisoner. However it does a poor job with security and the prisoner nearly escapes. Luckily one crew member blasted him off with a bazooka when he tries to fly off.
Sayla Mass looking out of White Base after the explosion.
Sayla Mass is Char's younger sister and is probably one of the better character designs that stood the test of time.
Amuro burying the RX78-2
Amuro Ray, once again decides to run away and this time he took the gundam which was the White Base's only hope of surviving against anything. He tries to bury it in a desert, hoping that no one will be able to find a giant robot buried in sand. Looks like the problematic kid needs to get more slaps from Bright Noa.
While Amuro is away on his vacation, Ramba Ral attacks. Kai in guncanon fought bravely, but the most he could do to the Ramba was kneel down and trip the gouf over. After some prep talk from Fraw Bow, Amuro returns just in time to fight the Gouf in the battle which is the very similar to Gundam 00 's final climatic battle between Exia R2 and the O gundam.
Gouf ready! (Since he threw away his shield, the gouf takes the role of the O gundam in 00)
RX78-2 Ready! (Exia R2)
Rx78-2 Wins. (Exia R2 wins too)
Rambal Ral swings out dramatically
However, Ramba Ral was not ready to give up just yet. He swings out of the Gouf shouting how badass he is compared to Amuro. Probably only someone with a catchy name like Rambal Ra can accomplish such a crazy and dangerous stunt in Gundam. This is of course, excluding Gundam Wing where every single character is officially insane.
Ramba Ra after surviving the crazy swing, came back for more action. M'Quve refuses to give Ramba Ral the new Dom mobile suit but that is obviously not stopping the boss from anymore insane actions. He infiltrates the White base with some of his soldiers. Luckily, White base had better security this time and Ramba Ral is forced into a corner like never before.
The Boss leaps!
With angry White base armed crew members behind him and the gundam in front of him, Ramba Ra was not intimidated. Instead he gave another speech to remind everyone of his greatness and he jumped right in to the gundam's hand. While hugging a grenade.
This guy is so insane he will fit into the after colony timeline.
Things went downhill after that particular epic explosion.
The female captain in the group photo got killed in a dramatic fashion by a Rick Dom.
Ryu Jose sacrificed himself in a kamikaze attack using the core fighter.
Kai's girlfriend got blown away
3 hyperactive kids on board White Base.
Not all is bleak as there seems to be much action about 3 orphans on the Ship. Seeing that this is the compilation movie, i wonder how much of the 3 annoying kids we will see in the actual series.
Even Amuro had to fix the tap for them too.
Towards the end of movie 2, the legendary Acguys appear to plant bombs in jaburo.
However, the pilots of Acguys, despite their best efforts, lost to the heroic actions of the 3 hyperactive kids.
And just when i thought the movie 2 was going to end on a ridiculous note, Char Aznable arrives to save the day nearly ruined by the Acguys' bad fashion sense.
Z'Gok Vs Rx78-2
Conclusion:
An enjoyable movie on the whole, with the classic characters of Gundam. However some characters were plain annoying and Amuro seems to have serious attitude problems. The final review of the third movie will be up soon, along with my thoughts of the entire trilogy.
Dramatic action scenes must be done in pink backgrounds it seems.
