A quick run-through of the tools i use to build my model kits. But before i get started, i must say that i am not a professional and i do not use professional tools like airbrush compressor set or anything sophisticated like that.
I also am very lousy at painting and will not paint unless absolutely necessary. I will run through the tools i use from the basic ones to optional ones.
From the left we have the Hobby knife, the side-cutter and the tweezers.
The side cutter is the Must-have out of the three. It is used to cut the parts out from the runner itself so i recommend buying a decent good quality one. My first model kit the hg seravee i had no idea what tools are needed and i used a small pair of scissors and a utility knife. The scissors broke halfway through and the utility knife was not sharp enough for craft purposes. The difference between usual household tools and the modelling tools is significant.
The tweezer is not compulsory, but i use it for putting on stickers which are usually very small such as the eye stickers. It can also be used to separate 2 plastic parts stuck together.
I have 2 filing sticks and the sheet below is a replacement for sandpaper. i use them for cleaning up nubmarks that are too obvious. Starting from the green stick which is the roughest to the yellow then the sheet below which is the finest. Actually sandpaper is good enough or even better for smoothering the surfaces. The two filing sticks came with my side cutter as a set so i used them. Do get about 3 sandpaper from the highest grit (roughest) to the lowest grit ( smoothest). Use the rough sandpaper first to rub off the mark then continue with the smoother one to make the part smooth and nice.
Gundam markers :
For gundam markers i use the greyGM02(200) and black GM01(200) for panel lining.
This is highly recommended as panel lining makes the model kit stands out and not look like a toy.
For example, black lining on the white part of the hands are drawn with a grey gundam marker.
The ones on the green i use the black gundam marker. I usually use grey for white and black for every other color.
There are also other gundam marker sets u can use to either paint a particular part or to hide nubmarks.
This is not a must-have but i do find the basic blue yellow red gundam markers handy as most gundams have these 3 colors.
Next we have a toothpick and a cotton bud u can find at home. I use them for cleaning up marker marks.
Here is a grey paint on the left and a clear green paint on the right. I am not particular about the brand and i think both work equally well. The clear green is very useful if u are building 00 kits. No need to buy many different paints at the beginning. Just see the kit and buy the paint u need.
For example i used clear orange paint for my hg brave's sword.
And if u do paint u will need thinner. To add a little to dilute the paint before paining and to clean up any unwanted marks.
Conclusion:
I hope this little tool page helps, there is no need to buy all the tools when you are building your first model. I recommend starting from a Hg or Ng kit as they are simpler to build and are cheaper.
